How to live long and in good health: Find your answer in Oriental medicine

Everyone wishes to live long and in good health. One way to attain the wish is to look for ways to realize it. The Western medicine directly attacks the diseases, say Oriental medical doctors, while, in contrast, the Oriental medicine tones up the body of man and strengthens his/her Gi (energy) and immune system against diseases. The Oriental medicine mostly comes from medicinal herbs normally found in remote mountains?although some are cultivated. In particular, rare and extremely expensive medicinal herbs such as Sansam (wild ginseng) are found in untrodden places of intractable mountain terrains and one root of it sells for tens of several millions of Won (around US$50,000) and, in some cases, Sansam is ‘priceless.’ Wild ginseng cannot be cultivated. If it were, it would not bear the same medicinal efficacy. Hence the exorbitant price.

▲Leaders of the Sangcheong County and important guests ignite a Large Herb Medicine Concoction Bowls.

The Sancheong County of Gyeongsangnam-do Province is located at the foot of the famous Jiri Mountains of Korea now preserved as National Park, which are noted for the discovery of these rare medicinal plants that grow in deep valleys and on steep slopes that do not allow human access. There are a total of over one thousand different kinds of health-promoting medical plants discovered living in the Jiri Mountains of the Sancheong County. The governments of the Sangcheong County and Gyeongsangnam-do Province started co-hosting the Sancheong Medicinal Herb Expo 14 years ago with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs and various other organizations of the Central Government to introduce a wide variety of health-promoting medicinal herbs. And it is the 14th year this year which the local governments have been co-hosting the rare event. In particular, this year Mayor Heo Gi-do of the Sangcheong County and Governor Hong Jun-pyo of the Gyeongsangnam-do Province are inviting the ambassadors and other senior members of the Diplomatic Corps with their spouses to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Festival with a view to introducing the value of the rare medicinal herbs to them and their countries. And The Korea Post is organizing the Tour for the Ambassadors and senior diplomats. (Formal invitation has already been faxed to the ambassadors and a copy is attached at the end of this Headlines. In case of our transmission failure, the meeting place is the VIP Lounge on the 3rd Floor of the KTX Seoul Station and the meeting time is 0840 hours Friday 3 October 2014. Please call Chairman Lee at 010-5201-1740 for reservation or 010-3388-1682 in case of Korean callers. Regular phones are 2298-1740/2.)

▲Re-enactment of the King’s receipt of Dongeui Bogam (Joseon Dynasty’s famed Oriental Medicine Book compiled by famed Korean doctor, Heo Jun.

The hosts have a special program offering a checkup on the Gi (Energy) of distinguished guests (eg, ambassadors and spouses) and diagnosing of health-enhancing tonic. For the ladies (family members of the ambassadors and other senior diplomats), the hosts have an Oriental medical massaging program good for the skin as well as for maintaining the optimum level of body weight. They also have an Oriental health callisthenic and dance program.Another special program for the ambassadors and families is a visit to the Hyeminseo (erstwhile traditional Korean Medical Clinic) of the Joseon Dynasty operated by the noted Oriental Medicine Doctor Heo Jun (1939-1615, author of Dongeui Bogang [Principles and Practice of Eastern Medicine, or literally ‘Oriental Medicine Treasure Book’]). Hyeminseo (惠民署) means ‘Benevolence Extending Office’ which is a Joseon Dynasty state-operated medicinal clinic first established in the 14th Year of King Sejo (1466) of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1909).

▲Sancheong Arirang (famous Korean folksong) is presented by the Choir of the Sancheong Elementary School at the opening of the Festival.

Everyone keeps some potted plants or an indoor landscaped garden in their living room, and uses chemical fertilizers. The Sancheong County Government has special plant nutrient that is many times more effective than regular fertilizers in the preservation and promotion of health of the potted plants. For further details and photos concerning the Festival, please visit: /news/view.html?smode=&skey=Herb medicine&x=11&y=11&section=163&category=189&no=622.-------------------------------------------

InspectionWhen an American army unit’s chow hall was visited by a team of inspectors, soldiers noticed that the food was better than usual and that there were even smiles on the servers’ faces. As they were preparing to leave after eating their meal, one of them, a woman sergeant, called an inspector over. “Yes, sergeant,” the inspector said, “Do you have a question?” “Well, sir,” she replied, “We were wondering if you would like to come back more often.”-----------------------------------------------
