The Korea Post notices:

There is no change to the tour of the Handong Global University on Thursday 11 June 2015.

There are only 3 days left to the Tour:

There are only 3 days left to the Tour of the Handong Global University, POSCO Museum and Yeongil-dae Pavilion on Thursday 11 June 2015.  Located in Pohang near POSCO, Handong University has incomparably outstanding features clearly telling it apart from other universities in Seoul and other regions, including an unrivalled long list of attractive scholarships and financial support for the Korean and international students. Deluxe KTX Train is used between Seoul and Pohang.

The Korea Post has already forward the Invitation of Soon-Heung Chang of Handong University to Your Excellency and Madam.

In case of our transmission failure, please advise us at 2298-1740/2, 1745/6 or 010-3388-1682 (Korean) or 010-3481-1101 (English), or 5201-1740 (Chairman Lee of The Korea Post).

Professor Kim Soon-kwon (AKA Maize Doctor’)

Interested in meeting with the famed 'Maise Doctor' (Prof. Kim Soon-kwon) as well as President Soon-Heung Chang of Handong University on the occasion of the Tour of the University for the Ambassadors on Thursday 11 June 2015?

During the tour of the University, Professor Kim Soon-kwon (AKA ‘Maize Doctor) will welcome and greet Your Excellency with a gift box of ‘Kim Soon-kwon Maize’ which is famous around the world as well as in Korea for the sweet taste of each grain even without cooking. Perhaps the esteemed country of Your Excellency might wish to seek cooperation with Dr. Kim. Further details on Dr. Kim, a member of the faculty of Handong Global University, are on Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Soon-kwon].

-------------------------------------------

Handong Global University stands out with many distinguishing features

An unrivaled long string of scholarships, financial assistance

Most of the high school graduates and their parents in Korea tend to insist on winning matriculation ‘at all cost’ at Seoul National University or other ‘prestigious’ universities in Seoul such as Yonsei, Korea, Ewha (for women), Sogang and a number of others.

However, closely examining other universities in Korea, such as those in different localities out of the capital city, one is appalled at the outstanding features of other universities in various localities, which stand out in various aspects.

For further details, please visit: /news/view.html?section=162&category=184&no=947

Today’s humor:

Humor from a generous former Asian ambassador

Humor at snail's pace!!

A snail starts a slow climb up the trunk of an apple tree.

He is watched by a sparrow who can't help laughing and eventually says, "Don't you know there aren't any apples on the tree yet?"

"Yes," said the snail, "but there will be by the time I get up there."

Seoul Kyungje

A father and son went fishing one summer day. While they were out in the boat, the boy became curious about the world around him.

He asked his father, "Dad, how does this boat float?"

"Don't rightly know, son."

"Dad, how do fish breathe underwater?"

"Don't rightly know, son."

"Dad, why is the sky blue?"

"Don't rightly know, son."

Eventually, after the boy asked his father several more questions, "Dad, do you mind me asking all these questions?"

Of course not, son. If you don't ask questions, you never learn anything."

Hankuk Kyungje

Tale of Longevity

An 80-year-old man goes to a doctor for a check-up. The doctor tells him, “You’re in terrific shape. Why, you might live forever. By the way, how old was your father when he died?”

The oldster responded, “Did I say he was dead?”

The doctor couldn’t believe it. “Well, how old was your grandfather when he died?”

“Did I say he was dead?”

The doctor was astonished. “You mean to tell me both your father and your grandfather are alive?”

“My 125 years old grandfather is getting married for the first time.”

“Why does the old bachelor want to get married?”

“Because his girl is pregnant.”

The haenyeo, strapping female divers for whom, “the ocean is their lover, their husband, their god”

When the haenyeo, or female sea divers, of Jeju Island are in the water, there are three items that they always carry: mugwort, chewing gum, and pain reliever. Rubbing mugwort on their goggles leaves a film that keeps them from fogging up while the haenyeo are underwater. They plug gum they have been chewing in their ears to keep water out. They take the pain reliever to ward off headaches that the water pressure can bring on.

[Reporter’s notebook] Samsung’s supposed worries about small-scale investors

On the morning of June 4, I got an email saying that US private equity fund Elliott Management thought that the proposed merger of Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries had significantly underestimated the value of Samsung C&T. The equity firm also said that the conditions of the merger were neither equitable nor in the interest of Samsung C&T stockholders. .

Seoul police cowed by homophobic Protestant groups in denying LGBT event

Seoul police are facing mounting criticism for their decision to ban a major LGBT event, in what many are calling a capitulation to conservative Protestant groups that have been openly hostile to the community. As a reason for banning the planned Queer Cultural Festival Parade, police cited a counter protest request filed by a Protestant group in an apparent attempt to disrupt the proceedings. But in accommodating the tactic of infringing on a group’s freedom of association by “getting there first,” police also disregarded a Supreme Court ruling finding the practice unfair. .

Anthrax case indicates US did not follow agreement on biological warfare

To facilitate cooperation on countermeasures for biological warfare, South Korea and the US signed information sharing agreement about biological weapons in 2013 as part of the US military’s JUPITR Program (Joint USFK Portal and Integrated Threat Recognition), which is designed to counter biological weapons attacks by North Korea. But recent evidence suggests that the US did not inform South Korea that it had brought anthrax and other hazardous materials into the country for experiments, .

Foreign investors expressing discontent with Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries merger

Since US hedge fund Elliott Management publicly stated that the conditions of the merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries were not in the interests of Samsung C&T shareholders, Dutch pension manager APG and other foreign stockholders have also expressed their opposition to the merger. Foreign funds that hold preferred stock in Samsung C&T have even called for a separate meeting of preferred stock holders. .

High-ranking US official indicates S. Korea should “speak out” on South China Sea

The US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs sent a message on June 3 calling for Seoul to “speak out” with Washington on its intensifying dispute with Beijing over dominium in the South China Sea. Daniel Russel delivered the remarks while answering questions about South Korea’s role in the dispute during a separate organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Korea Foundation at the former’s building in Washington D.C. .

Debate over minimum wage being put to online referendum

The meeting of the council, which is setting the minimum wage for 2016, comes as many in the labor community are getting behind the idea of a minimum wage of 10,000 won (US$8.98).
