Today’s humor:

Humor from a generous former Asian ambassador

A Gay situation

An employee of USAir with the last name of Gay boarded a USAir flight with a free travel voucher.

Soon after he sat down, someone else came and claimed he had the same seat assignment, so Mr. Gay moved down to an empty seat.

Soon after that the airplane began to fill up.

The rule with the USAir employee vouchers is that if a paying customer needs your seat, you have to surrender it.

So when the flight became completely full and still more needed to get on, a flight attendant went to the original seat of Mr. Gay and said the man now sitting there, "Excuse me, are you Gay?"

The man, somewhat stunned, said, "Well, yes, as a matter of fact I am!"

The flight attendant said, "I'm sorry, but you'll have to get off the plane."

At this point Mr. Gay, who had been watching all of this, jumped up and said, "Excuse me, you've made a mistake--I'm Gay!"

Finally, another man jumped up and said, "Well, hell, I'm gay too! They can't throw us all off!"

Hankuk Kyungje

Nervy

The man worked evenings. His car’s piercing headlights would illuminate his neighbor’s bedroom at 12:20 a.m. as he turned into his driveway.

The husband would awaken immediately and deliver a tirade about inconsiderate people.

One night his wife was roused by the man’s tossing and turning.

“Are you ill?” the wife whispered.

“No,” he said. “But it’s nearly 2 a.m., and that guy hasn’t come home yet. I’m worried about him.”

Fears of MERS spread, while the government bungles its response

Fears of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) are spreading in South Korea as the virus continues to infect more people by the day, aided by a sluggish response and confused policies emerging from the central government, which have reminded some of the aftermath of the Sewol ferry sinking. As the post of Prime Minister remains vacant, the Blue House has yet to step up and serve as a control tower for the MERS response.

Just why has MERS spread so quickly in South Korea?

On June 6, the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced the results of an analysis showing that the coronavirus causing the current outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, in South Korea has not mutated. These findings put to rest domestic speculation that the virus had mutated to allow airborne transmission, which would made it much more contagious. .

Foreign investors asking for fairer swap rate from Samsung C&T-Cheil merger

30 or 40 foreign institutional investors with shares in Samsung C&T asked for a fairer calculation of the swap rate for the company’s merger with Cheil Industries. They also asked that any additional restructuring carried out to help Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and his siblings assume control of the group be done in a fair manner that respects the interests of all stockholders, including small stockholders. .

US says North Korea may be operating another nuclear facility

[Reporter’s notebook] Seoul’s perilous approach on security vis-a-vis Japan

On May 30, as I was covering the defense minister talks between South Korea and Japan, I thought ‘South Korea’s position just keeps getting worse.’ One of the topics at the Singapore meeting - the first in four years - was Japan’s right to collective self-defense. Japan had approved the exercise of collective-self defense in July 2014, and its defense cooperation guidelines with the US were revised two months ago to reflect the change. It made sense, then, that concerns would be raised about a potential Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) presence on the Korean Peninsula. .

[Reporter’s notebook] Samsung’s supposed worries about small-scale investors

On the morning of June 4, I got an email saying that US private equity fund Elliott Management thought that the proposed merger of Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries had significantly underestimated the value of Samsung C&T. The equity firm also said that the conditions of the merger were neither equitable nor in the interest of Samsung C&T stockholders.
