[Analysis] What and when for next inter-Korean talks

To be determined are the agenda, location and level of the delegations at meetings two sides plan to hold soon

Following the South Korean government’s announcement on Aug. 26 that it would start preparing for inter-Korean talks, the next questions are the timing and agenda of the talks, which the two sides agreed to hold soon. The South Korean government has reportedly started taking steps to rebuild the framework for inter-Korean dialogue that collapsed during the administration of former president Lee Myung-bak.

South and North now making preparations for inter-governmental talks

South and North Korea began preparation for intergovernmental talks on Aug. 26 in the wake of an agreement at a “two-plus-two” meeting the day before to ease military tensions and create forums for dialogue. The May 24 Measures, sanctions barring inter-Korean exchange and trade implemented after the 2010 ROKS Cheonan, sinking may be one focus of the talks, Seoul said. .

After agreement, a blueprint for improved inter-Korean relations After inter-Korean agreement, it may still be too early for optimism

Along with predictions that the dramatic agreement reached in the “two-plus-two” high-level talks on Aug. 25 will bring inter-Korean relations to the next level, others are suggesting it is too early to be optimistic, given the propensity for conflict on the Korean Peninsula to ignite at the slightest spark. .

Pyongyang becoming “three-dimensional” city with skyscrapers and smartphones

A Yonhap News reporter shared an account of Pyongyang undergoing a visible transformation into a “three-dimensional” city, in an Aug. 26 piece for the agency after returning from a ten-day-long trip on Aug. 16 to cover the second annual international under-15 soccer tournament, saying “Changjon Street along the Taedong River is lined with high-rise apartment blocks equal in scale to residential-commercial buildings like Tower Palace in Seoul’s Gangnam district. .

If S. Korean students were workers, they’d be way into overtime

Jae-in (not his real name), 16, falls asleep at 1:30 am in the school dormitory since starting at his autonomous private high school in Seoul this year. Seemingly no sooner have his eyes closed than he is up again at 6:30 for another breathless day in school. Classes end at 4 pm, while supplementary classes continue on to 5 or 6 pm. After dinner comes compulsory free study until 11 pm. The late-night study sessions that go until one o’clock are nominally optional, but Jae-in never misses them. .

After inter-Korean agreement, is a summit possible?

The dramatic shift from military tensions to calls for exchange and cooperation at recent high-level “two-plus-two” talks between South and North Korea is raising hopes for a possible summit between leaders. The question of whether such a development could be tied to agreed-upon meetings between governments is drawing particular attention. .
