Pres. Park’s approval rating up to nearly 50% after inter-Korean agreement

Respondents cite peaceful resolution with North Korea as main reason for spike in support

Following the high-level talks between South and North Korea on Aug. 25, President Park Geun-hye’s approval rating jumped to nearly 50%, a poll shows. On Aug. 28, Gallup Korea announced that 49% of the 1,004 adults from around South Korea that it surveyed between Aug. 25 and Aug. 27 thought positively of Park’s job performance. This was a 15 percentage point jump from just one week ago, when Park’s approval rating was 34%, and it is the highest number since the third week of April 2014 (59%), just before the sinking of the Sewol ferry.

[Analysis] Halfway through term, Pres. Park hasn’t accomplished anything noteworthy

With Park Geun-hye reaching the midpoint of her term as president on Aug. 25, political analysts are offering critical assessments of her first two and a half years in office. When the Hankyoreh contacted 10 political scientists, pundits, and other experts on Aug. 23 to ask for a midway assessment of Park’s administration, all 10 responded that Park had yet to do anything worth assessing. .

Pres. Park avoids in-person meetings, and that may cause bungled efforts

One of the most frequent criticisms directed at President Park Geun-hye during her term so far has had to do with her avoidance of face-to-face reports. Her preferred method of communicating in writing and by telephone rather than meeting and discussing matters personally has been cited as more than just an idiosyncrasy, but the chief factor in repeated instances of confused government responses. .

[Cine feature] 7 Korean co-production milestones

As the local industry reaches saturation point at home, with Korean films looking to breach the 100 million admissions mark for the third straight year, alternate avenues for growth are being explored by studios and talent. New projects by Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook and Kim Jee-woon have drawn international media attention but just as prevalent in the news these days is news of Korean co-productions, most prominently with neighboring China, whose market became the world’s second largest last year and is already tracking 40% of its 2014 total this year. .
