One of the most terrible scenes in S. Korean political history

On the evening of Mar. 15, the ruling Saenuri Party refused to nominate lawmakers from outside the group that is pro-President Park Geun-hye. This will go down as one of the most awful scenes in the history of South Korean politics. While this is not the first time that a conflict over party nominations led to controversial meddling by the Blue House, it would be hard to find precedent for a group of sitting lawmakers being refused a nomination like this simply because they were on the president’s bad side.

Income inequality in South Korea the most severe in Asia

The top 10% of South Korea’s income earners are taking home nearly half of all income, a new report shows. This is the highest concentration of income among any comparable Asian country. In order to decrease income concentration, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) is calling for an aggressive fiscal policy.A report titled “Sharing the Growth Dividend: Analysis of Inequality in Asia” that was recently published by the IMF shows that the top 10% of South Korean income earners were collecting 45% of the total income, as of 2013.

At S. Korea’s top university, more and more students from a few privileged backgrounds

The admission examination for Seoul National University (SNU) this year was dominated by students from three specific backgrounds: special purpose high schools, autonomous private high schools, and general high schools in the three districts making up Seoul’s Gangnam district. The percentage of successful candidates to South Korea’s top university from those backgrounds has risen from 42% in 2013 to 49.1% in 2016.

Youth unemployment rate hits highest point ever

South Korea‘s youth unemployment rate topped 12% for the first time ever. Since Park Geun-hye became president in early 2013, the government has devised six separate youth job programs and has spent 2 trillion won (US$1.7 billion) a year on the issue, but the job crunch for young people is showing no signs of improving. If anything, prospects for the future are getting gloomier, as even the chaebol with the capacity to create good jobs are planning to offer fewer jobs to university graduates.
