Oppositionparties say: “President Park didn’t learn her lesson from the last elections.”

Ruling Saenuri Party taps pro-Park LeeJung-hyun as new chairman

The ruling Saenuri Party tapped Rep. Lee Jung-hyun, whohas won three consecutive terms at the National Assembly, as its new chairman atits national convention in Seoul on Aug. 9, 2016.

This is the first time a conservative party has elected aman from the traditionally opposition-strong Southwestern Jeolla provincialregion as its leader.

Lee won a total of 44,421 votes, defeating Joo Ho-young (ananti-Park lawmaker) who got 31,946 votes. The national convention also tapped fiveSupreme Council members.

Reps. Cho Won-jin, Lee Jang-woo, Kang Seok-ho and ChoiYeon-hye were elected to form the Supreme Council.

Most of the newly elected leaders are considered to bethe loyalists supporting President Park Geun-hye.

Here are media responses from the major Korean-language newspapersthis morning (Aug. 10, 2016):

Chosun Ilbo(independent, conservative):

Can herealty give a shot in the arm of the decliningruling party?

The national convention of the ruling Saenuri Partystarted in a factional competition, and ended in that state.

Newly elected Chairman Lee Jung-hyun is the first rulingconservative party leader who hails from the southwestern Jeolla provincialregion as an elected lawmaker. He was elected three times from his Jeollaprovincial constituency which is a barren region for the ruling camp.

However, Lee’s political career is substantially in his capacityas a secretary of President Park. He is widely known as a right-hand man ofPresident Park.

In fact, four out of the five newly elected members ofthe Supreme Council of the party are classified ‘Pro-Park men.’

Viewing this, it is very doubtful if the people, thevoters, would think that the Saenuri Party has really ‘changed’ after the humiliatingdefeat in the last elections.

On the contrary, there are possibilities that the people,the voters, would say, “Why Saenuri hasn’t learnt a lesson!”

If the Saenuri Party should try to continue to run out ofthe love of the people, there would be no future for the party.

Joong-Ang Ilbo(independent, conservative):

It dependents on pro-Park faction’s ability to give uphegemonism

The conservative party tapped a man from the Jeollaprovincial region as its new leader for the first time in the history ofconservative ruling party. One could attach a special meaning to the new development.Newly elected Chairman Lee Jung-hyun said, “Right from this moment, there willno longer be a ‘pro-Park’ or a ‘non-pro-Park’ faction, but we will all gotogether!”

However, if he wants to honor his statement, he mightneed to carry out sweeping reforms of the party, completely renovating theorganization.

He should try to establish a proper Party-Cheong WaDaerelationship, try to do away with such bad practices as ‘blackmailing relatedwith party nomination’ and other practices that are harmful to the party.

The party should also remember that the intransigent attitudeon the part of President Park brought about the defeat of the party in the lastelections.

Dong-A Ilbo(opposition-oriented independent):

Newly elected Chairman Lee should try to put an end tothe ‘age of eunuch’

The Saenuri Party suffered a humiliating defeat in thelast elections on April 13 because of the Pro-Park hegemonism. Looking at theparty giving its power to four pro-Park leaders out of the total five tells thepeople that the party hasn’t learnt a lesson from the last elections.

If the Saeunuri Party really wants to win the heart ofthe people, it should try to be able to say ‘no’ to such pro-Park leaders asSeo Chung-won and Choi Kyung-hwan?and even to President Park herself, ifnecessary.

Newly elected Chairman Lee declared, “Our party shouldeven be prepared to die to live!”

We trust that to honor his declaration he should try toseek the rebirth of the party establishing the party policies to meet therequirements of the times. Fate of the Park Geun-hye government hinges on howthe new chairman can properly steer the ruling party in the present politicalarena which is controlled by the opposition parties.

Hankyoreh Shinmoon(opposition-oriented):

Worries and requests from a Presidential secretary-turnedparty leader

The leading group of the ruling Saenuri Party, namely theSupreme Council members Cho Won-jin, Lee Jang-woo and Choi Yeon-hye, was formedsubstantially with the pro-Park leaders of the party.

One would call it a ‘Brilliant rebirth of the pro-Park Faction.’

It is true that the choice of the Saenuri Party members,who chose Rep. Lee Hung-hyun as their leader, must be respected.

However, if newly elected Saenuri Chairman Lee reallywants to meet the wishes of the people as well as the party members, he shouldtry to take a resolute attitude toward the President and Cheong WaDae.

Perhaps the first job he should try to tackle might be tosolve the problem of the controversial Chief Secretary Woo Byung-woo of thePresident. It would become the determining factor of his ability to run hisjob. If he really wants the success of the Park government, he should try tolearn correctly what the people really want, and say it to the President?tryingto correct her wrong decisions.
