Nexon has appointed Kevin Mayer, a former executive of the U.S. entertainment company Walt Disney and ex-CEO of Tik Tok, as an outside director, the company announced on Nov. 9.
“The move reflects the will of Nexon founder Kim Jung-joo, who has hinted at raising Nexon like Disney,” a market watcher said.
Kevin Mayer has made great achievements in various global entertainment industries, including film, television and online video services. As chief strategy officer of Walt Disney, he led the acquisition of Pixar, Marvel Entertainment, Lucasfilm and Fox.
In 2018, he was the CEO of the direct-to-consumer & international (DNI) division of Walt Disney and released new services such as Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, and Hulu and was in charge of overall operation of global channels.
He recently served as CEO of the global video-sharing app Tik Tok and as chief operating officer (COO) of Tik Tok's parent company ByteDance.
Nexon CEO Owen Mahoney said, "Kevin Mayer, as Disney's chief strategy officer, helped Disney to establish a branding strategy to help it become the world's largest entertainment company and led a new interactive entertainment leap as CEO of Tik Tok. We expect Nexon to present a vision to grow into a leading entertainment company in the global market."
Meanwhile, Kevin Mayer said, "Nexon is a global leader in rapidly growing virtual world-based entertainment. Nexon's ability to create an IP that has been loved and growing for decades will lead to rapid growth."
