Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is co-chairman of the Korean Peninsula Peace Summit Organizing Committee, said, “Today we have to plan for tomorrow due to COVID-19 and Omicron. In this global crisis, we are in a situation where we have to create new values and culture of life for a sustainable future.
“If individuals, societies, nations, and the whole world do not convert to a new peace ideology and system with the love-peace paradigm rather than the existing power and war paradigm, we must be concerned about the common devastation of mankind.”

He also said, “Although we are facing the splendid digital civilization of the 4th industrial revolution, there are more and more people who are exposed to the dangers of life due to the confusion of values and the emptiness of life as well as mental emptiness.
“In addition, in the community, aging-low fertility, economic polarization, climate change, and conflicts between religion and race are accelerating. As a result, a return to exclusive nationalism centered on self-interest is also prevalent, making respect for human diversity and international cooperation more difficult day by day.”

Ban also said that due to the ever-increasing competition for hegemony between great powers, the new Cold War regime in Northeast Asia is increasing and the situation on the Korean Peninsula is becoming increasingly difficult.

“We stand at a crossroads where we must pioneer the future of the Korean Peninsula through a new imagination in the competitive landscape of great powers. At such a crossroads, we would like to hold a “summit for peace on the Korean peninsula,” said Ban.
He added, “We want to bring about national unity and international cooperation, which is the most urgent task for peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula. Related to this, I would like to propose policies such as the establishment of the DMZ Peace Garden and the Korea-Japan Undersea Tunnel Project to form a national consensus for peace and unification of the Korean Peninsula.”
