National Football Association official says

South Korea will host Syria in an upcoming World Cup qualifying match in the capital city, the national football federation said Thursday.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said South Korea and Syria will clash at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. on March 28. It will be South Korea's seventh match in Group A of the final Asian qualification round for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

It will also be the first World Cup qualifier at home this year. South Korea will face China on the road on March 23.

South Korea are in second place in Group A with 10 points on three wins, one loss and one draw, one point back of Iran. Uzbekistan, China, Syria and Qatar are other Group A nations. Only the top two teams from the group will earn automatic berths to the World Cup, while the third seed must go through a playoffs for a chance to compete at football's signature event.

South Korea were held to a scoreless draw in their previous meeting against Syria last September. It ended South Korea's string of eight consecutive victories in the qualifying stage, dating back to the previous round. (Yonhap)
