Actor Song Kang-ho received the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony held in Cannes, France on May 28, 2022. Kang won the much-coveted honor for his role as a movie broker holds the trophy. This was reported by many Korean-language news media in Seoul, including the reportedly largest-circulated Korean-language daily, Chosun Ilbo.
Actor Song became the first Korean actor to win the Best Actor Award at the Cannes International Film Festival.
Also, Director Park Chan-wook won the Best Director Award for his work, The Decision to Break Up. This is the first time for a Korean film industry to win two awards side-by-side in the Cannes Film Festival competition.

Actor Song took on the lead role in the movie The Broker directed by Japanese master, Hirokazu Koreeda. In the Best Actress category, in 2007, Korea’s top actress, Jeon Do-yeon, was also the first Korean actress to win the award for her performance in Miryang. At that time, the actor who worked with Jeon in in the work was also Actor Song.
When his name was called as the winner of the Best Actor Award, Song hugged Kang Dong-won and Kore-eda Hirokazu next to him and went up to the stage. He first greeted him with Mercy Boku (thank you) in French, followed by “Thank you, I am honored. He is deeply grateful to the great artist, director Koreeda.”
After expressing his gratitude to fellow actors such as Kang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Lee Joo-young, and Bae Doo-na, who appeared together in The Broker, he said, "It seems to have been a great gift for my beloved family. I dedicate the glory and love of this trophy.” Then said, "Finally, I dedicate this honor to many movie fans in Korea and around the world."
Director Park Chan-wook is the third Cannes Film Festival winner this year, following Oldboy (Judges' Grand Prize in 2004) and Bat (Jurying Award in 2009). When the award was called, Director Park went to the stage with a smile and said, "There were times when all mankind raised the border high during the Corona 19, but we were able to share a single fear and anxiety. There was a period of loss, but it was an opportunity for all of us to realize how precious the theater is.” He also added, “Above all, my love for the two of them, Park Hae-il and Tang Wei, is indescribable.”
