Julian Eberhard of Austria won the men's sprint at the International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup here on Friday.

Eberhard finished first among 103 biathletes with a time of 23 minutes, 11.1 seconds at the IBU Biathlon World Cup in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul.

Lowell Bailey of the United States was second after finishing 40.7 seconds behind Eberhard at Alpensia Biathlon Centre.

Martin Fourcade of France, the overall World Cup leader and the competition favorite, took the bronze with a time of 23:56.5 in the 10km race.

South Korea's Kim Jong-min and Kim Yong-gyu finished 87th and 94th, respectively.

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen of Norway, who has won 13 medals at the Winter Games in his career, settled for 26th place.

The IBU Biathlon World Cup is one of the test events for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Only sprint, pursuit and relay events are contested in this week's World Cup. (Yonhap)
