Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday introduced the Bixby 2.0, an updated version of its voice assistant program Bixby, which can be applied beyond smartphones to other home appliances.

The previous Bixby 1.0 focuses on comprehending users' environment and context on smartphones. Bixby 2.0 will be applied to other home appliances, such as televisions and refrigerators, connecting all electronics, Samsung said.

"Bixby 2.0 will introduce deep linking capabilities and enhanced natural language abilities to better recognize individual users and create a predictive, personalized experience that better anticipates their needs," the company said.

Samsung plans to apply Bixby 2.0 on smart TVs to be released in 2018.

The company said it also plans to invite various application developers to join the ecosystem of Bixby and to open the software development kit in the near future.

First kicked off in May, Bixby is currently installed on Samsung's major smartphones, such as the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8, being utilized by some 10 million users in 200 different countries.

Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, also said it will expand cooperation with Google Inc. to lead the field of virtual reality and augmented reality.

Developers will be able to utilize Google's augmented-reality development platform ARCore to provide new services to users on Samsung's high-end smartphones, the company said.

To tap deeper into the field of the Internet-of-Things, Samsung said it will combine its existing services, namely SmartThings, Samsung Connect and ARTIK, into what it calls "SmartThings Cloud."

IoT is a concept of connecting different devices and machines to the Internet and facilitating the exchange of necessary data that improves overall efficiency and convenience.
