Applicants for 'unemployment credits' jump in Q1

South Korea saw more jobless people seek financial assistance from the state pension fund in the first quarter of this year amid the country's worsening unemployment situation, data showed Thursday.According to the data from the National Pension Service (NPS), 129,000 unemployed people applied for the so-called unemployment credits in the January-March period, up 12 percent from the same period a year earlier.Unemployment credits are the pension operator's financial support for those who receive unemployment benefits. Recipients of unemployment benefits can get financial aid amounting to three-quarters of their insurance payments for a maximum one-year period.The country introduced the unemployment credit system in August 2016, with the number of applicants totaling slightly over 497,000 as of the end of 2017.

Samsung de facto chief Lee Jae-yong visits China

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, the de facto chief of South Korea's largest conglomerate, is currently visiting the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in China, industry sources said Wednesday.

Sources said key Samsung officials from the semiconductor and display divisions are accompanying Lee, hinting that the top decision maker is aiming to expand ties with Chinese partners during the trip.Lee is anticipated to hold meetings with various Chinese firms, including BYD Auto Co., an electric vehicle manufacturer, sources claimed.Kim Ki-nam, the head of Samsung's device solution division, which oversees its crucial chip business, and Lee Dong-hoon, who leads Samsung Display Co., are traveling with Lee to China.

'Leaders of Two Koreas May Hold First Hotline Dialogue This Week'

The presidential office says that the leaders of South and North Korea may hold their first telephone conversation through the recently established hotline as early as this week. A senior presidential official told Yonhap News on Thursday that the first hotline dialogue may take place this week, but not on Thursday. Another official told reporters that if U.S. President Donald Trump announces the schedule of his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un within a few days and the two Korean leaders hold their first hotline talks soon after, the planned summit may come up in conversation. The official said that the two leaders will not just hold phone conversations without any occasion, hinting that they may discuss the Washington-Pyongyang summit through the hotline dialogue.

CBS: N. Korea Starts Pulling Cables from Tunnels at Nuclear Test Site

North Korea has reportedly started pulling cables from tunnels at its Punggye-ri nuclear test site, a first step toward closing them down. U.S. broadcaster CBS News issued the report on Wednesday quoting U.S. intelligence, but did not elaborate further details. The reported move came after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un vowed to shut down the country's nuclear test site in May during his summit with President Moon Jae-in at the Panmunjeom border truce village last week. Kim later announced that he would invite experts and journalists from South Korea and the United States to reveal the process to the outside world.

Two Koreas Likely to Set up 3 Facilities for Family Reunions

The leaders of South and North Korea have reportedly formed a general consensus on establishing three permanent facilities for reunions of families separated during the Korean War. A senior official in Seoul told KBS that during the Friday summit, the two leaders shared an understanding on the need to seek a more fundamental solution to the issue rather than conventional reunions involving just three hundred people at a time. As possible locations for the permanent facilities, Gaeseong City, the Mount Geumgang area in North Korea and Cheorwon in Gangwon Province are reportedly being considered. The two Koreas are said to be pushing for the plan to follow up on the Panmunjeom Declaration issued after the historic inter-Korean summit last week.

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho has held talks with China's top diplomat to discuss ways to improve the two countries' ties and the situation on the Korean Peninsula, state media said Thursday.Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit to the North came as President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held a historic summit last Friday, reaffirming the goal of "complete" denuclearization of the peninsula.The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Ri and Wang on Wednesday had an "in-depth" discussion on the issues of developing North Korea-China "friendly and cooperative" relations following a summit in Beijing between the leaders of the two nations in late March."They also candidly exchanged their opinions on the matters of mutual concern including the situation on the Korean Peninsula," the report said.

Moon's approval rating jumps to 11-month high on historic summit

President Moon Jae-in's approval rating has shot up to an 11-month high this week, a poll showed Thursday, following his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un that raised hopes for denuclearization of the communist state.In a survey conducted by Realmeter, 78.3 percent of respondents said they approved of the way the president managed state affairs.The figure marks an 8.3 percentage point spike from 70 percent tallied in a weekly survey conducted last week. Unlike the weekly poll, the latest survey was conducted only on two days -- Monday and Wednesday -- involving 1,002 adults across the nation, according to the local pollster.The latest figure apparently reflects the people's approval of the outcome of the inter-Korean summit, held at the Joint Security Area of Panmunjom on Friday.

Cheong Wa Dae on Wednesday dismissed the idea of pulling US troops out of South Korea following a peace treaty with North Korea, reiterating the need for a continued US military presence on the Korean Peninsula.According to Cheong Wa Dae, President Moon Jae-in said the issue of US forces stationed in South Korea should only be determined through consultations with Washington, and was not dependent on whether there would be a peace treaty with North Korea. “US troops in South Korea are a matter of the South Korea-US alliance. It has nothing to do with signing a peace treaty,” Moon was quoted as saying by presidential spokesperson Kim Eui-kyeom in a televised press briefing.

Expansion of leasing market crucial for EV growth: experts

To bee or not to bee: Urban bees all the buzz

Urban Bees Seoul CEO Park Jin was the only person in South Korea who took action after bees were decimated in 2010 when the central government forced beekeepers to destroy hives after a nationwide sacbrood virus outbreak. Almost 90 percent of the country's bee population was wiped out.After three years, Park did not see any sign of recovery in bee numbers. That's when the then office worker quit his job and started urban beekeeping from scratch in Seoul. The practice was almost unheard of then.

Verifying N.Korea's Denuclearization Could Be a Bumpy Road

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other officials have warned against undue optimism about the North Korea-U.S. summit, saying the aim remains the "complete, verifiable, and irreversible dismantlement" of North Korea's nuclear weapons. They insist the North must grant "unlimited" access to international inspectors. That means North Korea must scrap not only its nuclear test site in Punggye-ri, but also its Yongbyon nuclear plant as well as any uranium-enrichment facilities. A crucial part of the process is verification, which means Pyongyang must disclose all its nuclear weapons, fissile materials, facilities, technology and researchers.Inspectors also need to visit other facilities that are suspected of involvement in the North's nuclear weapons program.

China Denies Mao's Grandson Died in N.Korean Bus Crash

China on Wednesday denied rumors that the only grandson of former Chinese strongman Mao Zedong was among the casualties in a bus accident in North Korea last month. Responding to a written request by the Chosun Ilbo, The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the rumors are "groundless" but did not give details about the whereabouts of Mao Xinyu (48). The rumors were first reported by the Chinese-language version of Radio Free International on Tuesday, citing sources who said the 32 people killed in the crash were members of a group that reveres Mao Zedong and included the children of several soldiers who fought on North Korea's side in the Korean War.

Customs Service Pledges Fairness in Probing Korean Air Family

The Korea Customs Service has promised a thorough investigation of the troubled Korean Air owner family, which is suspected of smuggling luxury goods into the country and evading excise taxes. KCS Commissioner Kim Yung-moon on Monday told reporters that given great public interest in the scandal it will ensure "a thorough and impartial investigation" and make sure they are punished if the allegations are found true. Kim explained that Cho's wife Lee Myung-hee and their daughters Cho Hyun-ah and Hyun-min will be questioned but added, "It's going to take a while as there are a lot of things that we need to verify beforehand."

Possible locations for North Korea-US summit narrowed down to two sites

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have reportedly entered the final phase of negotiations over the location of the first ever North Korea-US summit to be held this month, with Panmunjeom and Pyongyang as the final candidates.“The US is currently pushing for Panmunjeom and North Korea for Pyongyang as the site of the summit,” a source in Washington who is familiar with developments concerning the summit said on Apr. 30.“A few days ago, President Trump said that the candidates for the North Korea-US summit had been narrowed down to two, but North Korea and the US were already talking about Panmunjeom and Pyongyang two weeks before he made those remarks,” the source said.

Fair Trade Commission officially acknowledges change in de facto leadership at Samsung and Lotte

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) named Samsung Electronics vice president Lee Jae-yong as Samsung’s de facto head according to the Fair Trade Act on May 1 in place of his father, Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee.The change comes four years after Lee Kun-hee’s hospitalization with severe health problems. According to the Fair Trade Act, the term head (literally “same person” in Korean legalese) legally refers to a person or corporation with de facto control over a particular chaebol. Explaining the reasons behind the decision in a press briefing, FTC chairman Kim Sang-jo said, “Among other things, it’s a reflection of the fact that Lee Jae-yong was the one who decided to strategically dismantle the Future Strategy Office (FSO).”

President denies adviser’s USFK surmise

President Moon Jae-in said Wednesday the issue of U.S. military forces stationed in South Korea had nothing to do with the signing of a peace treaty that would formally end the 1950-53 Korean War, in a rare public rebuke of his special adviser on inter-Korean policy, Moon Chung-in. The two are not related. President Moon’s rebuke was directed at a column published by Foreign Affairs on Monday in which his adviser described the possible withdrawal of U.S. forces from South Korea should a peace treaty be signed, which Moon has denied before. “The matter of the USFK [United States Forces Korea] belongs to the matter of the Korea-U.S. alliance. It is not related in any aspect to the signing of the peace treaty,” the president was quoted as saying by the Blue House spokesman, Kim Eui-kyeom.

China’s top envoy visits Pyongyang for first time in 11 years

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi kicked off a two-day trip to Pyongyang on Wednesday, the first such trip in over a decade, ahead of a high-stakes summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump.Wang departed from Beijing Capital International Airport Wednesday morning and arrived in Pyongyang later that day. He was greeted at the airport by North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Ri Kil-song on a visit that comes on the heels of the first inter-Korean summit in 11 years on Friday between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced Monday in a statement that Wang would visit Pyongyang Wednesday and Thursday at the invitation of North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho.

Samsung BioLogics takes on FSS over audit

Samsung BioLogics on Wednesday refuted an audit by Korea’s financial watchdog that said it violated accounting regulations, and claimed it did not receive any benefits from new accounting rules it introduced at the end of 2015.The company threatened to file an administrative suit against the Korean government if necessary.The biopharmaceutical arm of Samsung Group arranged an emergency press conference Wednesday, a day after the Financial Supervisory Service tentatively concluded after a year-long special audit at the request of civic activists and lawmakers that the Songdo, Incheon-based firm violated accounting rules.The FSS sent a letter of notification to both Samsung BioLogics and its two accounting firms offering them a chance to “explain” their books. A final conclusion will be made after the company comes up with explanations and the Financial Services Commission, the top financial regulator, holds a subsequent review and voting by members of the Securities & Futures Commission under the FSC.

Even the Conservatives Want Peace and Stability on the Korean Peninsula

The April 27 inter-Korean summit has received overwhelming support from the conservatives as well as the progressives and the moderates. There are also signs that the equation, progressives prefer inter-Korean talks, while conservatives prefer a hardline stance against North Korea, will no longer stand. As the possibility of a peace system on the Korean Peninsula grows larger than ever before, the issue has been accepted as a universal agenda transcending ideology. The major opposition, the Liberty Korea Party, and its attempt to downplay the inter-Korean summit as a peace show disguise have been criticized for going against the interest and mood of the conservatives.

The Sad Reality of Workers Witnessed Once Again on Labor Day

On May 1, the online edition of Media Today, a journal specializing in press reviews, included an article titled, "128th Labor Day Articles Hidden in Morning Newspapers." The article mentioned that on this day, Labor Day, of the nationwide daily newspapers published this morning, the Kyunghyang Shinmun was the only newspaper that published an article on Labor Day on the first page. The May 1 edition of the Kyunghyang Shinmun published an article, which described the Labor Day of the non-regular workers at GM Korea's factory in Changwon under the headline, "Engaging in the Same Work, But First to Be Laid Off Once Again." We're not mentioning this to boast of the labor sensitivity at Kyunghyang Shinmun, but because the first page of the newspapers on May 1 seem to symbolize the sad reality of labor in South Korea.

President Moon, "Chairman Kim Asked About the North Korea-U.S. Summit, And I Answered"

President Moon Jae-in and Chairman Kim Jong-un, head of North Korea's State Affairs Commission reportedly discussed the summit between North Korea and the United States in their private meeting on the footbridge bench during the April 27 inter-Korean summit. On April 30, a key Cheong Wa Dae official conveyed that President Moon said, "With the North Korea-U.S. summit ahead, Chairman Kim Jong-un asked (about it) and I answered," when his aides asked about the half-hour conversation on the footbridge in a meeting with Cheong Wa Dae senior secretaries and aides.President Moon described Chairman Kim as "honest and straightforward and polite." Ju Young-hoon, head of security shared an anecdote, "When the two first couples got on an elevator to head to the dinner, Chairman Kim made a gesture with his hands suggesting that President Moon get on first, and when first lady Ri Sol-ju tried to get on, the chairman tugged her hand so that first lady Kim Jung-sook could get on first."

Samsung BioLogics down sharply over accounting rule violation

Shares of Samsung BioLogics, a Samsung Group biosimilar arm, fell sharply Wednesday after South Korea's financial watchdog accused the company of violating accounting rules.Samsung BioLogics lost 15.47 percent to trade at 412,500 won (382 US dollars) as of 12:40 pm (0340 GMT).In its provisional decision, the Financial Supervisory Service said Samsung BioLogics breached accounting rules when it was listed in November 2016. Hyundai Mobis announces plans to cancel stocks, increase dividends

Hyundai Mobis, the parts-making affiliate of South Korea's top carmaker, promised Wednesday to write down shares worth 557 million US dollars in the next three years in a market-friendly move that followed growing demands from shareholders to improve corporate governance. The company said its board approved plans to cancel stocks worth about 600 billion won (557 million US dollars) for three years through 2021 and deliver dividends to shareholders twice a year. Shareholders have received dividends once a year in March.

Elliott takes legal action against S.Korean gov’t over 2015 Samsung merger

U.S. activist hedge fund Elliott Management has warned it would be suing the Korean government for its intervention in the controversial merger of Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries in 2015. Elliott on April 13 submitted a notice of intent to the country’s justice ministry to alert of an investor-state dispute settlement before officially filing a lawsuit against the government with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). The two have three months to resolve the issue before the U.S. investor takes it to the arbitration court.

Samsung Elec rapidly penetrates into Latin American cinema screen market

South Korea’s tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. will provide its light emitting diode (LED) screen Onyx to five cinemas operated by Cinemex, the second-largest movie theater chain in Central and South America, rapidly expanding its presence in the Central and South American cinema market. Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday it signed a deal with Cinemex in the movie theater chain’s headquarters in Mexico City to supply its LED screen Onyx to five cinemas in Mexico. Cinemex will use Samsung’s Onyx screen starting with its cinema inside Antara Polanco, an upscale shopping center in Mexico City, in October, and gradually add the Samsung screen to its four more cinemas across the country.

Cheil Worlwide acquires Romanian ad agency Centrade

Cheil Worldwide Inc., South Korea’s leading advertising agency under Samsung Group, said on Wednesday that it has recently agreed to buy Centrade Integrated, a full-service advertising agency headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, to strengthen its digital marketing and global capacity. The financial terms were not disclosed. According to Cheil Worldwide, Centrade, founded in 1993 in Romania, focuses on providing personalized marketing through big data analysis to clients across Eastern Europe including Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary. The company provides digital marketing to major firms including Procter & Gamble and Raiffeisen Bank and manages Samsung’s online website in Eastern Europe.
