Has a joint discussion to resolve Aral Sea situation
Chairperson Tanzila Narbayeva of the Senate of Oliy Majlis (parliament) in Uzbekistan paid a first visit to the Republic of Korea on August 6, 2019, and met with President Ban Ki-moon of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) at the Lotte Hotel Seoul. Ban is also well known as the former Secretary-General of the United Nations. Chairperson Narbayeva discussed with President Ban of the GGGI on the further development of bilateral cooperation in the field of climate change, water improvement and environmental security
Further discussions were conducted to promote the initiatives of solving urgent problems of the Aral Sea as well as creating the Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund (MPHSTF) for the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan.
Formerly referred to as the fourth largest lake in the world, Aral Sea had been quickly shrinking to a shallow lake bed since the 1960s. The former fishing ground is now a desert with poisonous salt storms and an extreme climate.
Due to its drastic impact, it is referred to as “one of the planet’s worst environmental disasters.”
In this regard, President Ban of the GGGI and Chairperson Narbayeva came up with an agreement to set the representative office of the GGGI in Tashkent to take practical actions in resolving the situation of the Aral Sea.
